December 2026: Bulls Island
December 2026 · Date TBD
Bulls Island, Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge
Meet at the main parking lot
The birding on Bulls Island is fantastic, especially during winter and migrations. A long list of rarities has been seen on the island, including several first South Carolina records.
We will take a charter with Coast Expeditions — a scenic 30-minute ferry ride through winding creeks to Bulls Island, a hidden gem in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. Along the way, naturalists will point out dolphins, sea turtles, and some of the 293 bird species that call this place home.
Rarities seen at Bulls Island include Masked Booby, Magnificent Frigatebird, Common Eider, Western Kingbird, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, and Snow Bunting. Long-billed Curlews regularly winter in another part of Cape Romain NWR.
